BOXES 2020
18” x 24” acrylic and graphite on paper
The idea of making paintings of imaginary cardboard boxes appealed to me as they are simple, practical and homely objects. Over the years I have made conceptual drawings of buildings floating above the ground plane, so that was part of the inspiration for these images. I wanted the boxes to be realistic, but painted in a rough and powerful way, and perhaps naively. The heavy black outlines help to achieve this and the strings or tape marks on the boxes are an important counterpoint to the simple untextured box panels. The shadows that the boxes cast on a tabletop or flat landscape are rendered almost like solid and heavy objects in their own right, echoing the boxes.
